“Star Trek” is celebrating its 60th anniversary, with the original series having premiered on September 8, 1966 in the United States.
“Star Trek” began in 1966 when creator Gene Roddenberry pitched his visionary Western in the stars, launching “Star Trek: The Original Series” (TOS) on NBC. Centered on the spacefaring adventures of Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. Leonard Bones McCoy aboard the USS Enterprise, the series used science fiction allegories to boldly tackle contemporary 1960s social issues like civil rights, the Cold War, and pacifism. Additionally, the show distinguished itself with an unprecedentedly diverse, multi-ethnic cast. Though NBC canceled TOS after just three seasons in 1969 due to low ratings, syndication throughout the 1970s cultivated a massive, passionate fan base (Trekkies). This grassroots popularity convinced Paramount to revive the franchise with a short-lived animated series and then “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” in 1979, followed by a hugely successful run of feature films.
Because the original show became a massive fan favorite, it paved the way for “Star Trek: The Next Generation” in 1987. That success expanded the franchise into dozens of other spin-offs, movies, and books over the years. Ultimately, the original series laid the foundation for a giant sci-fi universe that remains famous today.
