Danica wants girls to learn math!
Danica McKellar is an actress and an
internationally-recognized mathematician.
She is best known
to TV viewers as Winnie Cooper on the classic ABC
series, The Wonder Years. During the 2002-03
season, Danica had a recurring role as Elsie
Snuffin on NBC's The West Wing. She has also
guest starred in a number of TV series, including
Working (with former The Wonder Years
co-star Fred Savage) and CBS' How I Met Your
Mother.
Taking a break from acting for college, Danica
graduated summa cum laude at UCLA with a degree in
Mathematics, and co-authored a ground-breaking
mathematical physics theorem which bears her name
(The Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem). For this
accomplishment, she has been honored in Britain's
esteemed Journal of Physics and the New York Times,
who called her a "math superstar."
On August 10th, 2007, ABC World News with Charles
Gibson named Danica "Person of the Week" for her
role as the author of the bestselling "Math
Doesn't Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math Without
Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail."
In this October 2007 Sidewalks interview, host Cindy
Rhodes speaks to
the actress about the success of The Wonder Years
and being typecasted as Winnie, appearing in Stuff
Magazine, and writing "Math Doesn't Suck."
