SIDEWALKS host Lori Rosales talks to filmmaker John Singleton about getting into films; actress Danielle Moné Truitt about her participation in “Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog”; and their partnership in BET’s “Rebel” TV series, where Singleton is an executive producer and director and Truitt is the lead actress playing Rebecca ‘Rebel’ Knight.
Born in Los Angeles, director / writer / producer John Singleton went right to the top with his first film, “Boyz N the Hood,” which earned him an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director and becoming the first African-American (and the youngest filmmaker) ever to do so. Some of his other notable films that he directed include “2 Fast 2 Furious,” “Four Brothers,” “Baby Boy,” the remake of the 70’s classic “Shaft,” “Higher Learning,” “Abduction,” and “Poetic Justice.” Along with some of the previous titles listed, Singleton also was a producer on “Hustle and Flow,” “Black Snake Moan,” and “Illegal Tender.” On TV, he directed an episode of FOX’s “Empire,” Showtime’s “Billions,” and the “The Race Card” episode of FX’s “People v. O.J. Simpson: An American Crime Story.” Singleton’s other TV show is FX’s “Snowfall.”
From Sacramento, CA, Danielle Moné Truitt is considered a Triple Threat – actor, singer and dancer. Getting her start in the theatre, she was the video reference for Princess Tiana — performed the body movements and facial expressions -– for Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog.” In that film and related video game, she also provided the voice for Georgia. Truitt has guest-starred on TV shows, like ABC’s “Super Fun Night” and FOX’s “Mulaney.” She was in the films “Stolen Moments,“ “See Dick Run,” “Benny Bliss and the Disciples of Greatness,” and “ ETXR.” Some of her stage credits include “3: Black Girl Blues,” “In The Heights,” “Neat,” “Aida,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” and “Hair.”
